The last section covers surgery of the chin. Volume 2 is divided into 4 parts that cover secondary rhinoplasty, management of the airway, special topics and advances, and the personal approaches of 7 rhinoplasty experts each with their own chapter.
Lab Instrument Set – Dallas Rhinoplasty Meeting
The 4 included DVDs cover numerous surgical techniques, including primary and secondary rhinoplasty, harvesting cartilage, and tip grafting. The contributing authors include recognized experts in rhinoplasty who have backgrounds in plastic surgery 37 and facial plastic surgery 8 , which provides the reader with a broad base of rhinoplasty experience and knowledge.
Each chapter is laid out in a logical format and is well illustrated with diagrams, case examples, intraoperative photos, and sets of before and after photos that complement the text. Each chapter ends with a bulleted key points section that summarizes the chapter and gives the reader an easy way to review the salient features of each topic. Another notable benefit to the reader is the inclusion of the full text as an electronic book edition through the VitalSource Bookshelf application, which is available for PC and MAC computers, iOS devices, Android devices, and Kindle.
The videos are very clear, well narrated, and instructional. They provide the viewer insight into the surgeon's assessment, planning, and execution of a rhinoplasty in a spectrum of clinical situations, including primary and secondary rhinoplasties. All of the videos include before and after images.
The chapter section on the tip is extensive, progressing from basic techniques to suture techniques, grafting, and controlling projection. There is a 3-chapter section that covers chin surgery that is helpful. Surgeons who perform secondary rhinoplasties will appreciate the 7-chapter section that is authored by recognized experts in the field.
There are numerous excellent case examples in that section that are well illustrated and include accompanying text that is easy to follow and very instructive.
I found that section particularly interesting and informative. I also enjoyed the section on special topics, in particular the chapters covering ethnic rhinoplasties, which includes black, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, and Asian noses.
A pertinent and completely new addition is the chapter on the role of fillers in rhinoplasty, which contains important technique recommendations and precautions to be followed when using fillers in the nose. Lastly, the chapters on the personal approaches of the senior contributors provide an in-depth look into how each surgeon approaches rhinoplasty, executes the procedure, and manages the postoperative period.
Although very good overall, some of the videos are a bit outdated, and all of them could be redone in a high-definition format.
Many of the artist illustrations are the same ones that were used in the first edition and could be refreshed.
The title of the book may give the impression that it is regional, of limited scope, and not representative of the national and international reputations that the authors have.
One third of the authors live in Texas with more having trained in Texas , which risks giving the impression that the authorship is insular.
Constantian, and H. Steve Byrd.
The text is easy to read, and the graphics are a unifying element throughout the book, providing a unique roadmap through the operative plan. Dr Gunter's color-coded graphic diagrams, which have become the standard in demonstrating how a rhinoplasty procedure is planned and performed, illustrate the necessary steps for each case.
These excellent illustrations and photographs make the text easily understandable for the novice. The accompanying DVDs deliver a dynamic supplement to the written material, with anatomic dissections and demonstrations of surgical techniques.
In terms of content strengths, the first section of the book provides detailed information on basic terminology, nasal anatomy, preoperative analysis, and planning. The preoperative analysis and planning chapters of this section are exceptional and demonstrate how to evaluate the nose and the face to make a precise operative plan to achieve a predictable outcome.

The section covering the nasal tip is the strongest portion of book. Increasing and decreasing tip projection, adjusting rotation of the nasal tip, tip suture techniques, correction of alar cartilage deformities, tip grafts, and septal extension grafts for tip control are discussed in depth.
The chapters within this section are well organized and include excellent illustrations. All critical issues regarding tip surgery are addressed in a practical algorithm.
Another strength is the section covering secondary rhinoplasty, which covers surgical correction of dorsal deformities, reconstruction of septal cartilage, and alar cartilage defects. The chapters about the reconstruction of nasal tip cartilages and structural grafting in secondary rhinoplasty are also outstanding.
There are also 4 additional chapters on different ethnic noses.
The special attention paid to these nonwhite noses makes the book a universal reference for all rhinoplasty surgeons. Weaknesses Although this is one of the most comprehensive textbooks written on rhinoplasty to date, some additional topics should have been covered, and there are some areas I wish were addressed in greater detail.
Spreader flaps are one of the most useful recent developments in rhinoplasty surgery for restoring the dorsum after hump reduction and have became a routine tool for many rhinoplasty surgeons.
Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium –
Although there is a chapter in this edition on autospreader flaps, it does not show the detailed suture techniques of spreader flaps, and modifications are not discussed.First published: If you have previously obtained access with your personal account, Please log in.
