I this book's deficiencies on grounds that can hardly be justified now that these “ notes” introduction to differential geometry ought to have quite different aims. For a good all-round introduction to modern differential geometry in the pure mathematical idiom, I would suggest first the Do Carmo book, then the three John . What is the best self study book on differential geometry for a beginner? What is a good introductory differential geometry textbook someone.

You can read the TOC and excepts at site. So far I've found Kreyszig's book inviting because it starts off fairly simple and promises to remain in Euclidean 3-space for the bulk of the book. It has exercises along the way with detailed worked-out answers in the back of the book.
It looks like it's going to be a good introduction. They lay the groundwork for his recent work on Ricci curvature. One of them, Degeneration of Riemannian metrics under Ricci curvature bounds, is available on site. He would point to a book or paper and say, "You should know everything in here but don't read it!
My interpretation of this is to look first at only the statements of the definitions and theorems and try to work out the proofs yourself. Peek at the book only as needed.
Second, follow the advice of another former Harvard professor and develop your own notation. Because it appears that each differential geometer and therefore each differential geometry book uses its own notation different from everybody else's.
So you'll go nuts, unless you have your own notation and you translate whatever you're reading into your own notation. I'll check it out. In fact, I wouldn't recommend using forms in that course at all, despite the advice from Bryant who's one of the smartest people I know.
You can do everything that needs to be done with classical vector analysis. Forms are essential for abstract manifolds, which is what my books are about.

Related I will have to update this as the course continues an compare it to the other texts mentioned above. One piece of advice: Avoid using local co-ordinates and especially those damn Christoffel symbols.
